Celebrating Women’s History Month 2023 by Recognizing the Contributions of Women

March is Women’s History Month in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, a time to celebrate the achievements and contributions of women throughout history. It is a time to reflect on the progress made by women and the barriers they have overcome in various fields and industries.

HOW IT STARTED?

Women’s History Month can be traced back to 1978 when a group of women’s historians organized a week-long event in Santa Rosa, California, in honour of International Women’s Day on March 8th. In the following years, multiple cities throughout the country began to participate in celebrating Women’s History Week along with Santa Rosa.

In 1980, U.S. President Jimmy Carter officially announced National Women’s History Week to be held during the week of March 8th and encouraged all individuals across the United States to participate. “Too often, the women were unsung, and sometimes their contributions went unnoticed. But the achievements, leadership, courage, strength, and love of the women who built America was as vital as that of the men whose names we know so well,” stated Cater.

In 1987, Congress passed a resolution designating the month of March as Women’s History Month, effectively expanding the week-long event to a month-long celebration. Since then, Women’s History Month has been celebrated every March in the United States.

WHAT IS THE THEME OF WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH 2023?

Every year, the National Women’s History Alliance assigns a specific theme for Women’s History Month. In 2023, the theme is “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories.” This theme focuses on honouring women of the past and present who have been active in various forms of media and storytelling, including print, radio, television, stage, screen, blogs, podcasts, news, and social media. It recognizes women’s essential role in shaping how we tell and interpret stories and their contributions to shaping our culture and history.
